I went to a preview of The Velveteen Rabbit, part of The Unicorn Theatre’s Christmas season for children. I haven’t shed a tear over a rabbit story since Watership Down, and while this is no way in the weird and sinister league of that story, it’s still a beautifully told bittersweet tale that made me tear up a little. They have really Christmassed this adorable tale of a boy and his toy bunny right up, the snow-fall was magical. As well as live music throughout, I think children will love the physical theatre, the imagined ‘adventures’ the pair go on (the bed makes a spectacular pirate ship), and the emphasis on toys, playing and magic. I’d really recommend snapping up some tickets as soon as possible, it’s on until the end of December, and they are going fast. The Velveteen Rabbit is recommended for children age 5+ and is an hour and a half, including the interval.
